Mother’s Day is coming soon, I wish all over of world’s mums happy holiday. Did you know that Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May? It is actually Mother’s Day in the United States. However, no matter, for the business, as long as there is a promotional gimmick, it is a good day.
In fact, the origin of this Mother’s Day in the United States, and commercial promotion also has a great relationship.
The story begins with an American named Anna Marie. Reeves Jarvis. That’s a long name. I’ll just call her Jarvis. The mother, named Jarvis, gave birth to only four of her 11 children and lost seven. These children died of measles, typhoid, diphtheria and so on. As a mother, she was devastated by the death of her child, but she was clearly a mother who could turn grief into strength.
In 1858, she founded an organization for mothers called the Mother’s Day Working Club. To unite mothers in the fight against unsanitary habits that lead to the death of their children. The hope is to prevent children from dying by teaching them hygienic habits. For example, she explains to other mothers the importance of boiling water and how to prevent food from spoiling. She also has procedures for checking milk for spoilage.
Three years later, the Civil War began, and Jarvis’s Virginia split into two states. Jarvis immediately refocused the club. Under her leadership, the members of the club remained neutral and saved thousands of wounded soldiers, Union and Confederate.
When the Civil War was over, how could the soldiers who had fought each other all of a sudden end the animosity? In response, Jarvis created a “Mother’s Day of Friendship,” bringing together Union and Union soldiers and their families from both camps. Well, a loving mother indeed. She has always hoped that this “Mother Friendship Day” will continue.
Jarvis died on May 9, 1905, and Anna Jarvis, her ninth child, was born. For the sake of distinction, let’s call her Anna. On May 10, 1908, the third anniversary of Jarvis’s death, Anna carried on her mother’s wishes and held a memorial service for her mother and all mothers, and gave everyone present her mother Jarvis’s favorite white carnations. Since then, carnations have become flowers on behalf of maternal love.
With Anna’s tireless efforts, Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in every state in the United States. Finally, in 1914, President Wilson announced that Mother’s Day would be an official holiday in the United States.
